    Indian Maritime University, Kolkata Campus

The Indian Maritime University Kolkata Campus maintains its legacy as Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI) and earlier operated as Directorate of Marine Engineering Training (DMET). This sought-after institution specializes in marine engineering education. Since it opened its doors in 1927, the institution has substantially contributed to developing the maritime sector of India.

    A Glimpse into History

Marine engineering education in India established operations in 1927 through its training ship Dufferin. The need for Indian merchant navy officers resulted in the establishment of the Directorate of Marine Engineering Training (DMET), which launched two campuses in Mumbai and Kolkata back in 1949. During 1953, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru officially opened the Marine Engineering College that operated from the Kolkata campus.

Since its inception, the institution experienced growth through implementing the all-India entrance examination in 1962 and obtaining recognition from the Institution of Engineers (India) in 1982 before joining the Indian Maritime University (IMU) in 2008. The institution serves as a leading establishment for maritime education throughout present times.
