Marine engineering education in India established operations in 1927 through its training ship Dufferin. The need for Indian merchant navy officers resulted in the establishment of the Directorate of Marine Engineering Training (DMET), which launched two campuses in Mumbai and Kolkata back in 1949. During 1953, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru officially opened the Marine Engineering College that operated from the Kolkata campus.
Since its inception, the institution experienced growth through implementing the all-India entrance examination in 1962 and obtaining recognition from the Institution of Engineers (India) in 1982 before joining the Indian Maritime University (IMU) in 2008.
