The Super Mario Bros. Movie took the 2024 box office by storm, becoming one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time with a global total of ~$1.4 billion. Now, the teaser for the film’s sequel is here, and it brings in some heavy hitters from the Italian Plumber’s video game career, and the star cast to back it up.

As Bowser spends his days in captivity, his son, Bowser Jr., is gearing up to be the antagonist of this film, played by. Bennu Safdie. As The Super Mario Galaxy Movie takes the characters into outer space, fans have also been introduced to Princess Rosalina, played by Brie Larson.

Rosalina cuts a very Captain Marvel-shaped figure in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Joining the likes of Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), and Charlie Day (Luigi), Brie Larson seems to be bringing yet another blonde, star-themed, space warrior to life with Princess Rosalina.

Coming in at the end of the trailer, Rosalina takes down a humongous machine that decides to try and capture her, bringing to mind the very similar (although visually distinct) moment from Avengers: Endgame, where Captain Marvel (also essayed by Brie Larson) manages to single-handedly ground and destroy Thanos’ battleship during the Battle of Avengers Compound.

Rosalina is one of the key figures in Mario’s mythos, and would definitely be slated to appear in later films should the franchise continue to expand after The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Brie Larson seems to have a stacked release schedule ahead of her, with Avengers: Doomsday scheduled to release towards the end of 2026 as well, making it the second high-profile franchise featuring Larson to release an installment in that year.

A Key Character Is Expected to Make an Appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

While The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has introduced fan favorites like Rosalina and Bowser Jr., there is still one character that has yet to make an appearance in the films.  While even Toad and Donkey Kong have had major speaking parts in the franchise, with more than enough screen time, Mario’s loyal companion, Yoshi, seems nowhere to be found.

While there is very little footage to go on when it comes to the hotly anticipated sequel, fans have been expecting Yoshi to be an important part of the story. The character is one of the few members of Super Mario’s huge cast of characters who are as iconic as characters like Peach, Bowser, Mario, and Luigi. Yoshi’s absence is something that fans have already taken notice of, but have chalked up to the fact that he might not have that big of a speaking role anyway. Fans are still expecting the character to show up in the sequel. Donkey Kong’s absence was also something that irked some viewers, but either the film is going to have them sit out their latest adventure, or push for some demand before ushering them into a spin-off of some kind.

Apart from Yoshi, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is expected to feature some other characters

Speaking with Men’s Journal, the voice actor for Toad, Keegan-Michael Key, has revealed that the film is set to feature some deep cuts from Nintendo’s library of characters. Now, the teasers have already revealed Rosalina and Bowser Jr., so it remains to be seen which characters can show up in the film. Depending on who these characters are, fans may begin speculating whether Nintendo is interested in developing Super Mario as its own franchise, or if fans are in for the whole Super Smash Bros. experience, with characters like Kirby, Link, and Samus Aran thrown into the mix. Key said:

“We’re going to meet some new folks that are old favorites and some folks that I think are really deep cuts, but because of the way the story’s laying itself out right now, those characters are going to be very intriguing.”

It is far more likely that the characters that Keegan-Michael Key was talking about had more to do with Mario’s own universe rather than the wider Nintendo multiverse. Given that the biggest franchise that could carry a Super Smash Bros. Cinematic Universe is its own distinct entity, it might be more in line with what the company is thinking to speculate about deep cuts from Mario’s own history.

With secret characters, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Might Also Reveal Secret Origins

Given the long-running nature of Super Mario as a franchise, it is natural that theories and speculations try to plug holes in the lore and worldbuilding of the story. One of the most talked-about theories in the fandom concerns Princess Peach and Rosalina, one that the film might decide to roll with for its continuity.

In the first film, Peach reveals that her earliest memory was coming to the Mushroom Kingdom, which was visualized as a child version of herself coming through a pipe portal. What was interesting about this depiction was that she was depicted wearing a gown that was adorned with stars and crescent moons, something that might connect her to Rosalina, who often uses star and moon motifs in her magic as well.

While Mario suggested that Peach could actually be from his world, there is plenty of evidence pointing towards the fact that Peach could indeed be related to Rosalina instead. Given that the seed of Peach’s origins was planted in the first film, Super Mario Galaxy Movie might actually look into the storyline. There is no guarantee that such an idea might be introduced or even seen through in the sequel, but given the popularity of the fan theory and the many hints that have been dropped by Nintendo over the years, it is not beyond the realm of possibility that the film could reveal some familiar connection between the two princesses.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is slated to release on April 26, 2026.
