The Onam Festival 2025 is expected to be a marvelous spectacle of celebration incorporating the culture, heritage, and traditions of the state of Kerala. It is known by the name “festival of harvest” and is very important to Malayalis across the world.

It is anchored in myth and festivity, as this festival symbolizes the amalgamation of numerous religious customs, cultural drills, and engaging public celebrations.

This article will explore the history and traditions of the Onam Festival, as well as how it became embraced by the people of Kerala and beyond.

    Onam Festival History

The Onam Festival history has its roots in Hindu mythology starting from the history of King Mahabali who was the wise ruler of Kerala. According to the legends, Mahabali’s rule was overflowing with peace, prosperity, and equality.

This, however, made the gods nervous, and they sought Lord Vishnu for help to restore the balance. To do so, Lord Vishnu in his Vamana avatar approached Mahabali and asked for three steps of land. Even though he knew it was a divine test, Mahabali obliged and vowed to grant the request.

The first two steps of Vamana covered all of the universe, leaving no place for the third. So, Mahabali offered his head, and in turn, was sent to the underworld by Vishnu’s third step. In astonishment at Mahabali’s devotion, Vishnu allowed him to visit his people once a year, and this was honored during Onam.

Significance of Onam Festival in Kerala

Onam Festival is celebrated in Kerala for its art and culture as well as for its agriculture. Onam transcends its mythical roots and is a harvest festival that brings people from all cultures and religions together in thanksgiving for unity.

During Onam festivities, a jubilation-infused atmosphere takes over the state of Kerala. The state boasts a rich heritage that is evident in traditional artforms, floral designs called pookalam, and grand sadhya meals.

Traditions and Customs of Onam Festival 2025

    1. Pookalam: One of the most enchanting aspects of Onam festivities is the floral ornamentation done in the form of pookalam. Family members partake in friendly competitions to set patterns using fresh blooms, signifying an invitation to King Mahabali.

    4. Traditional Performance: The celebrations further incorporate cultural elements by adding gadhar dances such as Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, and Pulikali. These art forms narrate stories from epics and dazzle their audiences with costume displays.
    5. Temple Visits and Rituals: Followers frequent temples for prayers, and rituals, and to seek blessings without fail. The Thrikkakara Temple in Kochi is of high importance for the celebration of Onam.
