The current fashion trend of ignoring real bodies has an opponent in Vishakha Bhaskkar. Angrakhaa emerged as a fashion label under the visionary leadership of Vishakha when she established a brand that combines fashionable clothes with entrepreneurial opportunities for artisans who work with larger body types.
Vishakha entered economics and then became a passionate leader working for inclusive fashion while her brand remains just as inspiring.
In her exclusive interview-style feature, Vishakha opens up about her beginnings, the impact of Shark Tank, and what’s next for Angrakhaa.
Q1: Vishakha, your journey started in economics. What made you switch to fashion, especially plus-size fashion?
Vishakha: The field of economics has always remained foreign to me. My recognition of uninterested career pursuit prompted me to change direction. My online writing of mid-size and plus-size fashion pieces introduced me to a profound relationship. Reading the stories of numerous women on those blogs about their difficulties in finding appropriate clothing showed me an important business opportunity missing in the market. That’s when Angrakhaa was born.
Q2: The name “Angrakhaa” is so unique. How did it come to you?
Vishakha: I dreamt about the business name, which later became a permanent part of my awareness. And it stayed with me. The angrakha serves as an ancient Indian cloak representing protection and comfort so it connected powerfully with our mission to promote body positivity and cultural heritage. A name that would feel strongly Indian yet appropriate for universal understanding was what I sought. Our organization represents Indian heritage through its name while creating genuine portraits of real women who share real stories.
Q3: You started Angrakhaa with a partner. Can you share a bit about that dynamic?
Vishakha: Absolutely. The launch of Angrakhaa took place with Asana, who joined me as a colleague from my original job experience. Who became not just a business partner but also a mentor. Her guidance was invaluable as we navigated the overwhelming obstacles during the early phase of the startup. Our business relationship felt a lot like marriage; we complemented each other in the best possible way. Our ability to balance one another’s strengths and provide consistent support through both challenges and successes laid a strong foundation for Angrakhaa’s identity and sustained growth.”

Q4: Did you have any other mentors who guided you along the way?
Vishakha: The second supervisor at my place of employment significantly influenced my path. Work-related fashion projects brought me genuine joy so my mentor encouraged me to explore my passion for this field. My mentoring experience from that point forward steered my path because a person recognized my true passion, which eventually helped me redirect my path toward my ultimate goal.
Q5: Angrakhaa appeared on Shark Tank India. How did that experience shape your brand’s future?
Vishakha: Shark Tank proved to be a pivotal event for Angrakhaa. Angrakhaa gained essential validation from its Shark Tank appearance, which no other marketing endeavor could replicate. Viewers who saw the brand on television instantly bestowed their trust upon it as they recognized it was not merely an online store. Angrakhaa benefited from customer trust which produced excellent sales figures together with prestigious placement in Better India magazine and an expanded loyal consumer base. The appearance on Shark Tank confirmed our mission for inclusive fashion deserved its spot in mass media discussions.

Q6: What are your biggest learnings from running a brand like Angrakhaa?
Vishakha: Entrepreneurship educates its students about adapting while demonstrating resilience. You must perform deep market research as one of the fundamental business lessons because it means understanding your customers instead of making assumptions about their requirements. Always value stories from real experiences above all else. True life stories make genuine connections that work exceptionally well within the specialized realm of plus-size fashion.

Q7: What does the future look like for Angrakhaa?
Vishakha: I don’t believe in rigid five-year plans because life and business are unpredictable. But yes, there are some exciting goals:
- Community Outreach: We want to go beyond being a clothing brand—to become a movement that celebrates real bodies and voices.
- Global Expansion: We’re working on a new line that caters specifically to plus-size customers in the Indian and American markets.
- Local Production: I’m passionate about supporting Indian artisans and reducing our reliance on imported materials. Sustainability and self-reliance go hand in hand for us.
Q8: And on a personal note, what do you enjoy outside of work?
Vishakha: I love exploring new cuisines—cooking is a form of therapy for me. I’m also into painting and taking up little creative side projects. Creativity isn’t limited to fashion for me—it’s how I breathe.
Q9: Any advice for budding entrepreneurs, especially women looking to start their own brands?
Vishakha: People should avoid putting off their dreams for an imaginary perfect opportunity. Commit to small-sized initial steps while remaining dedicated and seeking people who encourage your progress. Subsequently listen to your audience because they will become your main teachers. Moreover, happy moments should be celebrated during both achievements and challenges of personal growth. The actual learning process occurs in challenging situations.
