The National Centre for Seismology has confirmed that at 2:41 am (IST) on Sunday, a 5.7 value earthquake on the Richter Scale hit Tibet. There were tremors reported nationally, but until now, no preliminary reports of casualty or destruction have been made. The authorities are keeping the matter in focus.
The epicentre was 10 km deep and in latitude 29.02N and longitude 87.48E according to the X handle of the National Centre for Seismology.
Tibet has seen some tremors over the past few weeks. The area, which is believed to be seismically active, was shaken by an earthquake of magnitude 3.7 on May 9, 2025, at 8:18 PM local time.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) puts forward that the earthquake was of a depth of only 10 kilometers. Shallow earthquakes are normally more hazardous in that they occur near the surface of the Earth, where ground shaking is much stronger and chances of aftershocks are high.
Activity already caused by the earthquakes in the region. In the Tibet area, two sequential shocks occurred on April 23, 2025. At 6:24 PM, one measuring 3.9 occurred, followed by another of 3.6 at 5:25 PM. Ten kilometers deep, both occurred.

Although the earthquakes were small, scientists warned that because of their proximity to each other, they might cause massive ground movement and potential destruction in the regions surrounding their epicenters.
Tibet’s position in a region with significant seismic activity makes it highly susceptible to earthquakes. It is situated on the boundary between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, one of the most seismically active regions of the Earth. Due to these huge plates colliding, stress accumulates and sometimes is released as earthquakes.
