Shree Balaji Knits is one of the inspiring stories in the textile manufacturing business that is stiffly competitive. A modest 10×10 room in Gurgaon, Haryana, had become, by 2009, a large 25,000-square-foot establishment that could care for 23 specific machines and hundreds of clients throughout India.
The Humble Beginnings
At first, we had a 10×10 room when we began the company. It was the same office, the same store and there were just 1-2 members in the team,” recalls the founder of Shree Balaji Knits. This modest beginning conceals the ambitious Dream that would eventually open after almost two decades of constant labor.
The founder, who has been involved in the textile industry since 1997-98, had a good base of knowledge and contacts that would later feed the company’s growth. With demand for the product in the market rising and business relationships improving, Shree Balaji Knits also started expanding steadily.
Growth: One Step at a Time
Although the growth of the company is not extreme, it is cautious and steps are taken purposefully. They then moved to a 2,200-square-foot store and collections from that first room. When that even proved unsuccessful, they purchased additional space on the same site. Machine acquisition went on the same trajectory; two, three, four, five and so on were found in need.
“The company’s development has been advancing step by step, ”say the founder. “When I talk about growth, then the first contribution or support to this growth is from the market. Since without the backing of the market, which cannot run through.
This growth philosophy is an insight into a business not based on rushed growth but based on earned trust and gradual progress, which this today’s often frenetic business world.

Product designed for global markets, premium grade

Shree Balaji Knits has created a distinctively unique portion in the premium fabric market. Having more than 7000 categories of knits and designed fabrics, their items include semi-jacquard, full jacquard, towel terry, eyelet, rice knit, transfer jacquard, and other blended fabrics (bamboo, hemp, linen, tassel, modal, axel, etc.).
What is really interesting is their business model. Unlike directly targeting the domestic consumer market, Shree Balaji Knits mainly provides supplies to garment exporters throughout India. These exporters make the fabrics into finished garments that are sold into international markets.
“This is a very superior and premium fabric”, the founder stresses, adding that only approximately 1-2% of their production is consumed directly by the domestic consumers. The company’s client list is a veritable who’s who in India’s export business—Radnik, Maulana Export, Pearl Global, etc., among the approximately 300-400 that they supply.
Adapting to Fast-Changing Fashion Trends
The fashion industry has seen a lot of changes in the existence of Shree Balaji Knits. The days of styles remaining for long intervals are long gone. “Trade was just like that before; they used to sell lots of them, but now trade has evolved,” he says. “In a year, 2–3 fashion trends or 3 products or content come.”
To remain relevant, the company keeps its own designers that design new fabrics, blends and textures as per market demands. They keep a balance between custom orders on the one hand and proactive development of samples and new products to be brought to the market on the other.
The Spiritual Foundation
The story about the company name is probably the most revealing. The founder has grown up a devotee of Lord Hanuman, who he considers “the most powerful in everything.” This spiritual connection is reflected by the name “Baalaji.”
After deliberations, the founder consulted with a priest in Delhi before settling on the name. The priest proposed the addition of an “S” prefix, which grew into “Shri,” providing a double meaning, associated also with the name of the founder, Shiva.
“I feel that ever since this work or company has been there, I have never had to go back in any way,” the founder reflects, attributing the company’s consistent forward momentum to both spiritual faith and dedicated work. “The karma is before that. So if you do karma and believe in God, then it will definitely be successful.”
Looking Ahead
Shree Balaji Knits continues to evolve with the market. Their future strategy involves adding 2-4 new machines annually, specifically ones that allow them to produce fabrics aligned with emerging fashion trends.
“The garment that is in demand, the garment that is going to be in trend—if you don’t have a machine for that, how will you give completion to China or other countries?” the founder asks rhetorically, highlighting the competitive global environment in which they operate.
As they move forward, Shree Balaji Knits stands as a testament to how traditional values, patient growth, market responsiveness, and technical expertise can combine to create lasting success in manufacturing. From a tiny room to an industry leader—it’s a journey worth celebrating.
