After 20 years, Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, and Emily Blunt are set to reunite to bring back one of the most iconic film franchises from the 2000s, The Devil Wears Prada. With the new teaser hitting the internet for the much-anticipated sequel, fans can’t wait to see what the film has in store, especially given how the first one ended.

Apart from the main trio, Stanley Tucci is also set to reprise his role from the first film, with Aline Brosh McKenna returning to write the screenplay. The film is set to be based on a sequel to the original novel, penned by  Lauren Weisberger, titled Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns

Initially, Meryl Streep was not keen on doing a sequel.

Revenge Wears Prada hit the bookshelves in 2013, about seven years after the film came out. However, it was not until recently that the cast was interested in making a sequel. Meryl Streep, as reported by Variety, was not keen on making a second film, as is the case with most films in her career. Anne Hathaway, too, was skeptical about a sequel. According to Variety, she said:

“I’m not sure if could is the right question. Should there be? I’d love to make a movie with all the people again, that’s something totally different. But I think that one might have just hit the right note. It’s good to leave it as it is.”

Despite such comments, Entertainment Weekly reported in July of 2024 that the entire original cast of the film, along with some key behind-the-scenes crew, were in talks of returning for the sequel. Now, the main cast is due to reprise their role in the film, with Tucci, Blunt, Streep, and Hathaway appearing in the trailer. While the latter two made an on-screen appearance, Blunt and Tucci were listed in the end card of the teaser.

The cast has always remembered their time on the set of The Devil Wears Prada fondly.

Whether it be the 10th anniversary of the film, or the 15-year reunion where Entertainment Weekly put together the oral history of the product, the cast of The Devil Wears Prada have always remembered their time on the production of the set fondly. Be it the gag that Emily Blunt and Anne Hathaway participated in at the 2007 Academy Awards, or the Actors on Actors section that had the two cast members meet, The Devil Wears Prada was a launching pad for multiple actors that were a part of he film.

The plot details for the sequel have not yet been released. However, it has been confirmed that while the film began shooting in New York City, production moved to Europe, where Streep and Tucci were caught conversing with Anna Wintour. The author of the original novel, Lauren Weisberger, worked under Wintour at Vogue, an experience that directly contributed to her writing The Devil Wears Prada

Meryl Streep stayed away from the cast of The Devil Wears Prada during filming

While the cast of The Devil Wears Prada are all praises for the production of the first film, and are often seen treating each other like family, Meryl Streep actually abstained from a lot of bonding opportunities on set. While she has been known to mix pretty well with her co-stars in other productions, Streep kept her distance from her colleagues behind the scenes to maintain the sense of dread that had to exist between her and the rest of the cast.

The Devil Wears Prada also managed to forge actual familial bonds. Stanley Tucci would go on to marry Emily Blunt’s sister after meeting her at Blunt and John Krasinski’s wedding. The film also made Blunt a household name, which launched her career in Hollywood. The actress would go on to star in a myriad of blockbuster films following the success of The Devil Wears Prada, such as Edge of Tomorrow, where she co-starred with Tom Cruise.

Not all cast members are returning to The Devil Wears Prada 2

While main characters like Andy, Miranda, Emily, and Nigel will be played by the same actors who essayed the roles in the first film, some cast members won’t be returning to the franchise. Adrian Grenier, who played Nate Cooper in the first film (Anne Hathaway’s Andy’s boyfriend), is not slated to return for the sequel.

It has instead been revealed that Patrick Brammall of Overlord fame will star in the film as Andy’s love interest. It has not been revealed who the actor will play, but Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that he will be a new love interest for Andy. Other cast members who have joined the sequel as fresh blood include Lucy Liu, Sydney Sweeney, Pauline Chalamet, and B.J. Novak.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is two decades in the making, with the teaser, as of the writing of this article, bringing in a whopping 4.3 million views in less than twenty-four hours. The teaser has received a lot of positive feedback online, with fans anticipating the release of the film in Spring 2026. The film has director David Frankel and producer Wendy Finerman returning as well, further solidifying the faith that fans have in the sequel. While Hollywood has had a tough break with sequels, remakes, reboots, and revivals of all kinds, it seems that fans are in for a great ride with The Devil Wears Prada 2, given that it convinced even Meryl Streep to do a sequel.
