West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee stakes out another hard line on what she sees as divisive politics by the BJP as it relates to unity and secularism of the state. At a public address recently, Banerjee was critical of the BJP’s alleged provocation in communal lines, stating that West Bengal will not allow divisive agenda from anybody. With even more political activity in the state, Banerjee said that both the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and BJP are争eing to seize control.
She said the BJP is playing a dirty game by picking and choosing what religion to emphasise in order to create further political furor. The chief minister once again reiterated how her government is busy in keeping peace and amity of all communities in West Bengal.
“Our belief is in diversity and unity,” Banerjee said, describing the cultural diversity and harmony of different faiths living together in peace that is typical in the state. Secularism has deep roots in West Bengal, she said which are old enough for people of all faiths to dwell side-by-side without fear or division. We are now getting comments about religious congregations, prayers from Banerjee who warned the BJP have captured such events as divisive ploys.

It all needs to be said loudly, Kolkata newspapers have been covering her words with great interest with regard to the political discourse of current phase.
The BJP, however has negated Banerjee’s charge saying the TMC has been playing its own version of divisive politics. The party says it was concerned with development and good governance only and did respect the religious sensibilities of all communities. In West Bengal, tension level is pretty high — both making its way into blaming and counter-blaming each other quite often.
