As the capital city has been declared one of the most scorching regions in India, the national heatwave alert has been issued by the central govt. urging states to take precautionary measures against deadly summer heatwaves. We will see mercury rising dramatically in next few weeks; this spells serious health problems for those who are at the most temporary threat. With the Centre expect to remind states of their obligation to proactively prepare, especially in regions like Delhi, Rajasthan and the central belt where temperatures are forecasted to hit altaregion high. Heat action plans and awareness campaigns to reduce the consequences of the impending heatwaves are highlighted in the advisory.
Delhi, because of its dense urban landscape and smaller amount of greenery, is highly susceptible to urban heat island effect (i.e. heat retention and amplification of temperatures). The populace of the city have been cautioned to be more alert, drinking of water in large quantity and avoiding outdoor activities, especially during the peak hours of sunshine so they can wear light loose fitting clothing. The Centre also takes keen notice in its advisory to states that there should be a proper supply of drinking water particularly for public and also the weak sections. Vital supplies are being stockpiled at healthcare facilities across the state to be ready for an increased number of heat-related conditions such as heatstroke and dehydration.

Outdoor workers, such as construction laborers and street vendors who are more at risk for heat exposure is also a part of the advisory. States should move to pass laws that include, shady areas at workplaces, staggered working hours and cooler drinking water.
The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has been asked to issue guidelines for the residents of the city and draft some advisories on mitigating risks, heatstroke symptoms and care. The DDMA is also working to ensure a common and integrated response by different government as well not-for-profit agencies for this approaching heatwave. The heatwave is predicted to come highlights a change and the need for some long term plans to tackle this effect of climate change. The experts reiterate that greening of cities under sustainable urban planning and adopting energy efficient practices to reduce urban heat island should be promoted for the mitigation point of view. Stay updated during this coming weeks and take all precaution necessary to protect you and your family.
