Microsoft Redirection — People should use Teams not Skype
End of an Era
Skype for consumers will shut down on its official date of May 5th, 2025. The move is part of Microsoft’s larger effort to simplify communication sets and consolidate the focus on Microsoft Teams as its top personal and business hub. Although Skype for Business lives in its timeline, we have a big difference in the consumer version demised.

Transition to Teams
Microsoft is pushing all Skype users over to Teams ( free ) right now and it has the company allowing users to migrate with a single sign-on into Teams using their existing Skype credentials, literally registering to use Teams being almost the same process they already are accustomed to. Skype Credit and all the subscriptions held by paid Skype users will be active until the end of their renewal cycles and options on how to use the dial pad functionality within Teams are being researched for the end user.
A Look Back at Skype’s Legacy
Skype, launched in August of 2003 has a huge hand in establishing internet phones and video calling mainstream by joining together what cost too much or would have been impossible otherwise at scale anchor the very first interaction. Skype, acquired by Microsoft in 2011 was traditionally the app to get for all your personal (and some business too ) communications. But, with a plethora of alternative messaging and video conferencing services available and Microsoft focusing more & more on building/Turning Team up(into something), including more remote collaboration in the mix (mandatorily) was a retirement call with the stalwart platform.
