A tense situation unfolded at the Punjab-Haryana border as police took strong action against protesting farmers. On March 19, 2025, Punjab Police detained several farm leaders in Mohali and cleared out protest sites at Shambhu and Khanauri borders, which had been blocked for over a year. The move has sparked anger among farmers, who are now planning fresh protests to fight back.
Police Clear Protest Sites
The Shambhu border, a key spot where farmers had been camping since February 13 last year, saw heavy police action. Punjab Police used bulldozers to tear down tents and temporary setups made by the farmers. The same happened at Khanauri border, where around 200 farmers were detained. The farmers, led by groups like Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, were demanding a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) for their crops.
- Detentions in Mohali: Farm leaderslike Sarwan Singh Pandher and Jagjit Singh Dallewal were picked up in Mohali while heading to Shambhu after a meeting in Chandigarh.
- Heavy Police Presence: About 3,000 police personnel were deployed, using JCB machines to clear the sites.
- Haryana’s Response: Haryana Policealso started removing concrete barricades on their side to reopen the Shambhu-Ambala road.

Why the Crackdown Happened
The Punjab government defended the eviction, saying the protests had hurt businesses and industries. Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema explained that the long closure of two major highways had caused big losses for traders. He urged farmers to take their fight to Delhi since their demands, like a guaranteed MSP, are against the central government. Meanwhile, the Haryana Police issued notices to farmers in Ambala, asking them to face investigations related to the protests.
Tensions After a Failed Meeting
The crackdown came right after a meeting in Chandigarh between farm leaders and a central delegation led by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. The talks, which lasted over three hours, ended without any agreement. Another round of discussions is set for May 4, but the detentions and evictions have left farmers feeling betrayed. Some leaders, like Guramneet Singh Mangat, claimed the police even took control of Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s ambulance during the detentions, leading to clashes.

What’s Next for the Farmers?
The farm leaders are not backing down. After being detained, many were sent to Patiala Central Jail, while Jagjit Singh Dallewal was moved to a guest house in Jalandhar. The farmers’ groups are now rallying for protests across Punjab, demanding their voices be heard. With the Shambhu and Khanauri borders finally being cleared, the question remains—will this end the farmers’ fight, or will it spark a bigger movement?
