Tragically, stalwart actor Manoj Kumar has passed away at the age of 87 in Indian film industry which is in a deep mourning. Prolonged illness, the beloved actor who personified patriotism and was popularly known as Bharat Kumar breathed his last fired a new arrow in the bow of Indian cinema that has been painted across generations.
His last rites would be performed tomorrow and family, friends and fans will pay tributes to the departed.
Manoj Kumar played so important a role to Indian film history. He was a multi-talented person — he acted, directed, produced and wrote a lot of his own work within the film world.
He made many of his films dedicated to society, reflecting the spirit and currents of this great nation.
Two of his well known works were “Purab aur Paschim” and “Roti Kapda Aur Makaan if one can term them as a patriotic film as much as socially relevant among numerous others. Purab Aur Paschim dealt the schism of Indian and Western cultures whilst in Roti Kapda Aur Makaan he dwelled common man’s struggle for food, clothing and shelter.

Manoj Kumar’s work mattered beyond celluloid. He was a progressive filmmaker who used his status to delve into critical social issues and was titled as “Bharat Kumar”. His films brought out the pride in us and made us ponder what our country was going through.
His contribution to Indian cinema have been recognized with scores of awards — among them the lifetime achievement Dadasaheb Phalke Award (highest in Indian cinema).
