OTTAWA: Prime Minister Mark Carney signaled a radical change in the US-Canada relationship under President Donald Trump on April 28th, in the wake of a large Liberal Party win in the 2025 Canadian federal election. He said that any talks with President Trump in the future will remain between two sovereign countries, and Canada has many ways, beyond U.S. dependency, to drive prosperity. By its own result, the election is considered an unambiguous rejection of a Canadian populist approach, akin to Trump’s in Canada. Domestically, the incoming Carney administration is set to manage a highly problematic relationship between Canada and the U.S., a mix of friendship and a reliable Canadian position on independence and economic interests.
