Self-talk is an important aspect of our mental well-being. How we see ourselves, and where we feel we are in relations with our goals, shape our view of our own self. If we feel positive, stressors and life might still get to us, but realistic reframing of our situation can give us the courage to deal with it, if done in a healthy and balanced manner.
Many call this mindset. The classic example of whether the glass is half full or half empty.
If you are someone who believes in manifesting your dream like or even positive self-talk and how it can help you form a likeable image of yourself, here are some affirmations to start your day with. After all, kindness like charity begins at home.

Positive affirmations to start your day with
From looking in the mirror and saying, “I’m beautiful,” to writing the same in a journal, there are as many affirmations as there are ways to engage with them. Then how do you know what affirmations to choose, other than the ones that make you feel your best? We reached out to psychologists and psychiatrists to get the best affirmations for you to start your day with.
- You can’t find purpose, you create it.
Dr. Ranjan Ghosh of Good Karma shared this, reminding us that in times where we feel lost, we have power to find something that motivates us. We might not be able to change everything about our situations, but we can find a reason to keep moving. If not, there’s always reaching out to our communities for support or if possible, starting therapy.
- You’re worthy because you exist.
A quote from my novel “Siya”, I heard it first in therapy. It captures the same sentiment that Dr. Who does when he says that in 900 years of space and time he didn’t find anyone that wasn’t important. It reminds us that we matter, even when we are resting, and even when we are productive. While we are a part of a system and have to play our part, we are not defined by our productivity but have value simply because we are.
- A wizard is never late nor early.
To add a little whimsy to our lives, we can look to fantasy books and while punctuality is important, we have to remember life isn’t a race. We are all on our own paths to different destinations. It’s the journey that’s the lesson and there is no point in comparison, for all that does is steal contentment.
- Be audacious
A quote from Nadia Meli on Susbtack, this is one of the affirmations I would tell myself. In a world of hustle culture or slow living, choosing to be authentic to yourself is one of the best things you can do for yourself. While we have to remain adaptive to our situations, loosing ourselves or shrinking isn’t the answer either. As Shakespeare said, to thine own self above all be true.
- I do not rush my becoming, I unfold like dusk- soft, certain, whole.
Psychologist and art therapy practitioner Bharti suggested this. The goal is to remind us that we do not need to be anyone but ourselves. Growth can take its time, and we will be here for it but that doesn’t have to induce a feeling of falling behind.
Now, these are just some quotes and affirmations that speak to me as a person. Others might recommend affirmations like, “I am beautiful, I am smart, I am strong,” or even, “I welcome money,” or “I am on the path to where I’m meant to be.”

Your affirmations, at the end of the day, are shaped by what makes you feel positive. Your goals, and your insecurities, things that you need to unlearn, and areas where you need to extend grace towards yourself, all play a major role in what affirmations work for you. The same applies for how to engage with those affirmations, whether it’s by writing, crafting, or simply speaking them out loud.
While there is the risk of toxic positivity when we look online for affirmations, reminding ourselves that we can work on only what we can control helps. In some cases, such as the climate crisis, we can feel helpless when we think of our circle of control and while that grounds us in reality, reminding us that not all the problems are created by us, it can also be demotivating. However, community support, engaging in climate action, resting to return stronger, and learning more can help us in those situations as long as we are prepared to accept what we cannot control and work on things we can impact, even if the goal is to widen what we can change.
Starting our days with a smile and a positive mindset is always fun and makes us a happier person to be around. Other ways to achieve a great start to the day include engaging in movement, and other forms of wellness such as complimenting others, practising realistic gratitude, engaging in actions that affirm our values, deep breathing, spending time in nature, learning something new and connecting with other people. Art and creativity also boost our mood whether that’s through cooking our favourite dish or singing in the shower.
In a world where self-love is rapidly becoming a commercial term, redefining what loving yourself means, whether it’s allowing space for growth and mistakes or simply pursuing hobbies, is a long journey and affirmations can be the starting point. The goal is to build a life that is based on your untrusting values and not dependent on external validation beyond a reasonable amount.
