On May 7, 2025, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) released a statement concerning the new Operation Sindoor that India had commenced to attack terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).  The operation reflected a calibrated response to the attack on the Pahalgam terrorists that occurred on April 22 and took the lives of 26 people.  The PIB, emphasized the rapid precision strikes undertaken by the Indian Armed Forces against 9 terrorist targets that were operating from recognized bases of terrorist groups that were specifically organized to carry out cross-border attacks.  These bases were directly coordinated with the planning and execution of attacks from the Pahalgam assault and historic planned attacks.

The PIB documented as focused, measured, and non-escalatory the exercise of Operation Sindoor.  They stressed, none of the operations were against any military installations of Pakistan and efforts were undertaken to avoid civilian casualties.  Their explanation for Operation Sindoor was: To dismantle the terrorist networks and infrastructure to deter future terrorist activity and protect national security from future terrorist threats.  The government re-assured that it remained committed to holding to account those responsible for the Pahalgam assault and would do all things to protect the people and territory of India.

The PIB also stated the government exercised extreme restraint in both in how they selected targets and carried out the operation. It concluded by asserting that Operation Sindoor underscores India’s resolve to combat cross-border terrorism and its commitment to maintaining regional security and stability.
