Congress leader Shashi Tharoor expressed serious worries on the situation in Manipur and the “severe difficulties” the state faced on account of illegal immigrants. He highlighted that this problem needs an immediate solution as he thinks it only escalates the already existing troubles in the area.
In the backdrop of the moot discussions on why Manipur is getting agitated for so long now that are going on, Tharoor spoke. He said the arrival of illegal immigrants is straining state resources and a demographic shift which is adding to the already existing ethnic divides.
Tharoor said, “Manipur is going through very difficult hours due to illegal immigration and there is no magic wand to solve this it requires a strategy of the state to manage its borders properly and end undocumented migration on a large scale. He recommended that Centre “accordingly” should take pro-active steps in securing the region and deploy effective border control mechanisms.
Tharoor also spoke on the issue of President’s Rule in Manipur. He alluded to the difficulties in that region but contemporized that a balanced strategy is required, this time he stressed the need for central govt. Must consider every option available to start reign and protect state residents.
“Manipur’s situation is deeply worrying,” Tharoor said, urging a nationwide solution of the root causes for conflict at both state and central government level. He said there must be dialogue and a reconciliation between these communities but one also has to take strong action against the criminals behind the violence.
The Congress leader is one among the increasing number of people who have demanded that Manipur needs an immediate intervention. Illegal immigration is often presented as the word which defines everything in the debate over a state’s future, and many Argue that with continued unrest a natural consequence.
Tharoor’s intervention, just as Shashi Tharoor Manipur comments comes at the time when situation still remains tetchy and way for longer lasting peace are still welcome. President Rule, illegal immigration — the debate continues to be very much alive. Manipur situation still high on national agenda
