United Nations: United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Monday, May 5, 2025, is to have its closed session consultations on the deteriorating India-Pakistan relations. Pakistan requested an emergency session to the pause (non-permanent member of the 15-nation council)
Closed Urgent Consultations
National Security Council closed-door consultations beginning today (Monday) with a presidency in Greece lasting until further notice in which UNSC members will take stock of the unstable state of affairs, between India and Pakistan.
Background for the Heightened Tensions
It comes after the terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, where at least 26 people were killed (mostly tourists) as recently as recently. The attack has significantly ramped up tensions between India and Pakistan, with India taking retaliatory steps and continued cross-border firing.

Pakistan’s Formal Request and Worry
Formally requested an emergency consultative as the level of concern was getting into an unmanageable situation at where Pakistan wanted the UNSC to know about. Pakistan’s administration has said it will communicate to the council what it calls “aggressive actions, provocations and provocative pronouncements by New Delhi” — primarily referring to India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.
International Lobbies for Restraint
As rhetoric and actions escalate, the United Nations and numerous member states have raised alarm, calling for de-escalation. UN officials have also asked India and Pakistan to go in for utmost restraint and solve their disputes peacefully through dialogue as a matter of urgency. The External Affairs Minister of India had also interacted with a number of UNSC members in the following weeks post-Pahalgam attack stressing the importance of holding perpetrators and planners accountable.
