A Delhi dweller recently narrated his agonized and despairing plight to me, when his wife was allegedly indecently touched & harassed and when he turned to the police later on-it was for naught.
The husband’s version is a disturbing reminder of the police carelessness and victim assisting phenomenon that seems to perpetuate this type of situation.
The husband says his wife was groped and insulted by that we don’t know in a commonplace. He says this incident resulted in his wife being traumatized and traumatised. He and his wife went to the police station near to where he had been attacked immediately afterward
But police, according to husband he did not care as the reported officers were having no interest. He stated They were told that it was not a serious offense and not enough for the police to haul anyone in right away. The police were also unwilling to register a First Information Report (FIR).
The husband says that, “I am completely disheartened and furious with police. My wife was attacked and instead help came with ignorance. We have zero power.
It has raised serious questions regarding how much responsive the Delhi Police is when it comes to cases of harassment and indecent behavior. It also laid bare the obstacles that victims have to overcome in getting justice.
This led to outrage from some locals and activists who demanded an inquest into the alleged police misconduct. They have also highlighted the necessity for a safe space so that no victim or survivor will feel harassed.
“We want police to arrest those who harasses in malls,” a local activist told. “The police are there to protect and serve the public, and authorities must act on all complaints.
The husband filed the furious complaint, but Delhi police have not yet issued a statement on the matter. Nonetheless, the incident has shone a light on how police and law enforcement need to be more sensitive/ responsive when it comes handling complaints about harassment as well inappropriate behaviour.
A lot of residents are scared and don’t trust the system because of this.
